Throughout history, women have created and used special personal patterns of language to express themselves. In China’s Jiangyong County in southern Hunan Province, women were taught nushu, (possibly early as the Song and Yuan dynasty, 13th to 14th century) an ancient secret written and spoken language. Nushu allowed women to freely share with each other their innermost intimate thoughts, experiences, feelings and affectionate gratitude regarding their strong bonds of female friendship.
